First class translations

What’s translation?

Translation is the transfer of one text from one language into another. This sounds easy really. Yet every language has its own idioms and idiosyncrasies. On the one hand, each language reflects the same environment yet on the other, there are certain things in every language that simply do not exist in another. For this reason, there is no such thing as a one-to-one translation. 

Language is something vital, animated. New names and terms are for ever taking shape that used to be restricted to a specific field and all of a sudden find their way into colloquial language. Not only this, language is always subjective. A text that fails to appeal (linguistically) to one person will simply delight someone else.

A translator must not only have excellent command of his/her languages but needs to be familiar with the subject matter of the text he/she is dealing with, to appreciate the contexts and to transpose them into the other language.  These are high standards that all our translators satisfy.

 

What are the type of translations we offer you? 

1. Normal translations- the 3-eye principle 

A normal translation means that a translator translates into his/her mother tongue. It means the correct transmission of the source text into the target language. The result is the linguistic opinion of one translator. The target text is then checked to ensure it is complete and to make sure any figures have been correctly transposed. For all translations required for informative purposes, this is fully adequate.

2. Translation corrected by another Translator – the 5-eye principle 

Do you want to have our translation published in some form, or does the text have to have a certain advertising impact or reach a particular target group?   In this case, the text must be checked by another native speaker. If you are unable to ensure this is done, you simply give us the go-ahead! The working translation will then be reviewed by a second translator and any proposals for change will be discussed by the two translators. Four eyes see more than two! The final text is then read through by a third person to ensure it is complete and, where applicable, that the figures have been correctly transposed.

3. Text Adaptations

A translator is always bound to the content of the source text. The content of the source text has to be reflected in the target text. Sometimes a text has to be rewritten in full if it is aimed at a particular target group. This is what is meant by an adaptation. The translation is adapted to suit the text target.

 

How can you contribute to the quality of a translation?

1. Be specific in what you want. Do you want German spelling as it used to be or in the revised version? Is the translation intended for the United Kingdom or the United States? Is the translation to be published or is it only needed for purposes of information? 

2. Provide us with background material, where possible in the source text and in the target language. It is particularly helpful to have identical texts about precursory products or other texts about the product or similar products. If your company already has its own lists of words and terms used, we will be happy to implement them in our translations. 

3. Do let us know if there was anything you did not like about our translations. We will comply with any requirements you might have and take due account of them in future.
